Jeti-Oguz Gorge — Brief Overview
Jeti-Oguz Gorge is one of the most beautiful natural landmarks of Kyrgyzstan, located on the southern shore of Issyk-Kul Lake, about 30 km from Karakol. The gorge lies on the northern slopes of the Terskey Ala-Too Range and is famous for its dramatic red sandstone formations known as the “Seven Bulls.”
The gorge stretches for about 37 km at an altitude of around 2,200 meters above sea level. It is surrounded by alpine meadows, forests, and mountain landscapes rich in wildlife, including ibex, deer, eagles, and occasionally the rare snow leopard.
According to local legend, the seven red cliffs symbolize seven bulls, and the nearby rock formation known as the “Broken Heart” tells a tragic love story connected to the origin of the red rocks.
Today Jeti-Oguz is a popular destination for travelers and hikers, offering scenic valleys, panoramic mountain views, alpine flowers in summer, and access to nearby attractions such as Kok-Jaiyk Valley, waterfalls, alpine lakes, and the Jeti-Oguz health resort with mineral hot springs.
The gorge is also a gateway to several trekking and mountaineering routes in the Terskey Ala-Too Mountains.
